Taking Advantage of Year End Sales – New Children’s Clothing

By Kristi Patrice Carter

Did you know that you don’t have to be a millionaire or even a thousandaire to dress your kids in designer clothes? Heck, if the truth be told, you might be able to outfit your little prince or princess in designer threads like True Religion, 7 For All Mankind, Diesel, or Pelle Pelle for an entire season for the low price of $250 or less. But how, you might ask? Do you have to purchase items from someone who stole them or use some other illegal means? Ummm, no. You simply have to shop smarter, that’s how. You see, by shopping smarter, you can extend your dollar a whole lot farther and your little tykes can reap the benefits of your hard work and effort. The key is to shop at Year End sales and stockpile clothes then. OK, it may seem like a lot of hassle and extra planning, but the pay-off can be huge!

For instance, you have seen those huge full page ads in the newspaper and heard television advertisements when retailers like Nordstoms, Macy’s, and Carson Pirie Scott announce their huge End of Year blow-out sales. Did you go or did you simply ignore the ads? If you went, good for you!  If you didn’t, you truly missed out on some great – no, phenomenal – deals!

Here’s why. Large retailers offer incredible year-end sales for many reasons. First, they need to clear merchandise off shelves to make room for new merchandise. Second, they often overstock shelves and aisles for the Christmas season, and once the holidays are over, they need to de-clutter their stores by getting rid of merchandise at huge discounts. One of the most popular items that retailers put on sale each year is clothing.

Typically retailers mark up their clothing about 400%. Whew, I know that’s hard to believe, but it is true. Let’s use a realistic example: If you paid $100 for a pair of designer jeans for your teenage daughter, the retailer you purchase them from paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $25.00. Therefore, it is not unusual at a Year End sale for this same retailer to markdown these designer jeans by 60% and sell them at a discounted retail price of $40.00. The retailer is still making a profit of $15 per pair.  Even at a ridiculously low discount of 70%, the retailer still comes out ahead with $5 for every pair sold at the Year End sale.  The retailer also successfully clears out inventory, while you get a great deal on designer jeans for your teenager.

For the true shopping guru out to get the best deals, there are generally no better bargains to be had than at Year End clothing sales. Retailers are motivated to clear inventory and show a decent profit for the year.

Sure, the stores are swarming with people and the checkout lines are grueling, but if you are serious about grabbing designer and name brand labels for your children while saving a whole lot of money, Year End sales are worth the frustration, mobs and exhaustion. Look at it from a dollar and sense point of view. If you have three teenagers, and you purchase 6 pairs of designer jeans at 70% off at a Year End sale, your total cost would be $180.00 instead of a whopping $600.00. By braving the crowds and spending a few hours sorting through bins and racks and waiting in line to pay, you will save a whopping $420.00!
