It’s All About Me - Why You Need an ‘About Me’ Page and How to Create One That Stands Out!

By Kristi Patrice Carter

I’ve got to be honest with you: if you’re an eBay seller who doesn’t have an ‘About Me’ page, you are losing a lot of sales and repeat buyers. "Why" you ask? Because, an 'About Me' page symbolizes to your clients that you’re a serious eBay seller, that you take pride in your products, and that you care enough about them to describe your business.  The sad thing is that this is one of the least used features on eBay, and I am not sure why except sellers don’t realize its importance. "But, it takes so much time," you say. Ummm, no. It doesn’t take much time at all. In fact, in less than 15 minutes you can write a quick snippet about yourself and your business that will motivate buyers to do business with you. Plus, it is totally free! Did you get that? It doesn’t cost you one dime.

Plus, an 'About Me' page brings your reputation up a notch or two. As you know, this is critical to your success as an eBay seller.  Your reputation is everything and the more that  buyers know about you and your trading practices, the more comfortable they will be buying from you. Plus, a comfortable buyer is a happy buyer and happy buyers spend more money per item because they know they are dealing with a reputable seller who will deliver the advertised goods in a timely manner. If you are truly serious about selling on eBay and making huge profits, you must have a creative and memorable ‘About Me’ page.

If you are not familiar with an ‘About Me’ page on eBay, don’t fret. It is simply a mini website or web page that allows you to promote your eBay business. Anyone on eBay with a little ‘me’ icon beside their username has an ‘About Me’ page and other eBayers can “read all about them” by simply clicking on their ‘About Me’ page.

Plus, the great thing is that you don’t even have to know HTML to create a page. EBay provides easy to follow templates that you complete.  Choose a layout, add your photos and content and voila – you are done!  Woohooo!

Okay, so now that you’re convinced that you need an ‘About Me’ page, let’s go through the elements that you should include on your mini website if you want it to stand out.

Business or Personal Description: The part of your ‘About Me’ page that readers will see first should be personal and well written. Keep it short – one, two or three paragraphs will do. Talk about how long you have been in business or why you have a passion for selling on eBay. If you have a specialty, such as vintage clothing or watches, let your readers know that you are an expert in this niche and that you are constantly adding new and exciting finds to your auctions weekly.

Prompt Buyers: Use your ‘About Me' page to encourage eBay buyers to either add you to their list of favorite sellers or to sign up for your newsletter. In this way, you can market to them on a regular basis and truly build a loyal client base. Any research will tell you that repeat buyers, especially those in specific collectible areas, spend more money per item than the casual, one-time buyer.

Promotions: If you offer free shipping or 2-for-1 shipping, mention it up near the top of your ‘About Me’ page.  eBay has become notorious for sellers charging exorbitant shipping fees to make up for low auction prices.  By offering a discount, you are inviting buyers to purchase from you instead of someone else.

Photographs: Everyone loves pictures! The graphical elements are also what make your page stand out. You might want to include a photo of yourself or your family so that buyers can see whom they are trading with. Or you might want to consider a photo of your business or business logo. Other great photos to add are of unique or rare items that you have sold on eBay (past or present). These photos will pique the interest of buyers and show them that you have the items they are searching for. Once you have uploaded your photographs, you can choose from three different layouts that place pictures in different locations on your ‘About Me’ page. Try all of them and use the preview feature to determine which one looks best with your content and digital photographs.

eBay Feedback: If you have exceptional feedback on eBay, show it off! There is an automatic link within the template to add your feedback automatically. You can even choose how many pieces of recent feedback you want to include on your ‘About Me’ page -- from 10 to 100. My advice is to keep it to 25 or fewer; otherwise your page gets very long and bogged down.

Auction Items: There is an automatic link available through the template setup to include a list of your current auctions. You must include this on your ‘About Me’ page. This allows buyers to see all your items at a glance. However, if you are a high volume seller my recommendation is to include the first 50 items only so the page is manageable and buyers do not lose interest because the page is too long.
